Chapter 14: Paxton

I RUSHED INTO THE TREES, not waiting for Jenna, hoping that she would be safe on the rock. All I could think about was finding whoever was out there watching us. I knew in my gut that was the case—I had been able to feel it, the eyes upon our bodies, but I hadn’t been able to stop myself from tasting Jenna anyway.

“Hello?” I called out as I stopped, looking around for any sign of anybody in the trees. I didn’t see anybody. I sighed in frustration and started to walk around, searching the ground for a hint of footprints, broken branches or torn up leaves. I saw nothing—I knew nothing of how to track. I clenched my jaw in irritation as I continued to look around, circling back to the pond. I paused when I saw something red in front of me, something hanging from a branch a few feet away. I drew closer to see that it was a jacket that had been snagged on a branch, a giant tear on one side where someone had tried to rip it away before giving up. I picked up the jacket, noted that it was a man’s, folding it over my arm and hurrying back to the pond. Jenna stood at the tree line, and when she saw me she darted forward, throwing herself into my arms.

“What was it?” she asked, looking up at my face. I held up the jacket.

“Someone was out here. They tried to run away. I found this caught on a tree.”

“Any idea whose it is?” she asked, taking the jacket from my hands, searching it over. She dug in the pockets and pulled something out—a folded up piece of paper. Jenna unfolded it and my brow furrowed in confusion to see that it was nothing but a sheet of math homework, slightly crumpled up and only half-done. She reached into the pocket again and found a broken pencil, holding it up in front of us.

“What does this mean?” she asked.

“It must have been someone from the school,” I said. “A student, maybe.”

“Why would they be out here?” she asked.

“I don’t know. Could have just been a kid peeping.”

She blushed a deep shade of red, looking away from me.

“Can we go inside?” she asked, a shiver running through her body. “It’s—I don’t like being out here. I feel like someone is still watching us.”

“Okay,” I said to her, taking her hand. She pulled hers away gently and gave me a shy, guilty look before walking ahead of me to the house. I felt something drop in my stomach realizing the reality of the situation; what I’d done with Jenna had changed nothing about our situation, only made it more complicated. I could tell that she was ashamed of what we had done, and I knew, too, that there was no comforting her.

We got inside, and I paused in the doorway, remembering the paintings stacked in the living room. All at once I was filled with confusion again.
